In partnership with the Division of Rehabilitation Services (DORS), The Arc Baltimore offers a variety of Pre-Employment Transition Services. They provide an opportunity for students to prepare for their future. Students can choose to focus on employment, job skills, interpersonal skills, work based training and/or college options. Students who are interested in these services must be between the ages of 14 – 21 and have a documented disability. Here are the courses that we provide:

Career Exploration
Students will explore and expand upon their different interests by using them to relate to and identify different career paths.  Students will also, create a profile, which they can use to find jobs in the area, information about those jobs and the job skills required.  Students will be able to use this resource and manipulate the data entered even after the course is completed.

Self-Advocacy
This course is tailored to each individual to feel a sense of empowerment.  This is accomplished by educating students on how to speak up for themselves, identify and communicate their needs, know their rights and those protected by law, identify resources available to them and how to use them and to better understand their disability and how to explain/express that to others.

College Prep
This class prepares students who are transitioning from a high school setting and introduces them to the world of college. Special emphasis on: How to navigate the campus, understanding class prerequisites, how to enroll in noncredit and/or trade programs, how to read a syllabus.  Students will also tour a college campus and learn about the Office of Student Disability Services.

Soft Skills
Students will become familiar with the expectations of employers and how soft and interpersonal skills can affect their success in the workplace. Students are provided with experiences, insights, and strategies to further develop these skills in preparation for the social aspects of employment.

Work Based Learning Experience
Want to experience what it’s like to actually work in a desired field or occupation? This is the program for you!  We work with each individual and community businesses to create unique internship opportunities for each student.

Job Hunters
The course will focus on how to best present yourself to employers through interview skills, resume writing, and professional dress.
