After graduating from art school years ago, Jamaar stumbled into a job at a group home for adolescents with disabilities – and loved it. He had found his calling as a job coach for people with disabilities and later joined our Project SEARCH team at the University of Maryland Medical Center in 2018.
Working with students with disabilities at the hospital, Jamaar finds fulfillment in helping interns overcome barriers to employment. “For many,” he says, “It is just conquering the voice in their head of someone from their past who said they aren’t cut out for a job. I love watching them succeed.”
Due to his warmth and personality, Jamaar is well-loved by the interns. He’s firm but not pushy, always ready to lend a hand, and uplifts others with his humor. He is also known as someone who can find the right employee for the job. He’s often approached with the question, “Do you know of anyone else for our department?” His reply: “Yes, I have just the person.”
"As someone who started working at the age of 14, I understand the many benefits of getting a job: self-worth, purpose, and independence."
